Zusammenfassung:Previously abstracted from the original Russian as item 199508-56-0558. To determine more precisely the boron amount that has a great effect on steel hardenability a study was made into low alloy steels with boron content ranging from 0.000005 to 0.005 mass%. Microscopical examination and hardness measurements of steel specimens after hot rolling and quenching allow one to conclude that maximum hardenability can be obtained at boron contents of 0.00005 to 0.0005%. Boron amount in steels should be decreased with an increase of cooling rate and the level of steel alloying.
