Peter Desain and Henkjan Honing, music, mind and machine: studies in computer music, music cognition and artificial intelligence

This book is a collection of reprints of published papers based on the doctoral dissertations of its two authors. One thesis is entitled Structure and Expressive Timing in Music Performance and addresses two topics: the detection of metric beats in a performance and the ways in which a performance becomes 'expressive' through departure from a perfectly rigid spacing of those beats. Another thesis, Music and the Representation of Structure: From Issues to Microworlds, is about representation structures for music application and their impact on programming various music tasks, particularly those related to composition.
