Flow cytometric validation of a commercial kit to assess the concentration and viability of bivalve hemocytes
•A protocol to measure the concentration and viability of Perna canaliculus hemocytes was validated.•The validated assay, using a simple user interface flow cytometer, was compared to 3 other assays.•Using physiologically-compatible media with commercially-available assay kits is important.
