Cyanoacrylate-containing copolymers as compatibilizing agents for poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)/poly(methyl methacrylate) blends

Blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) with poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) were prepared by solvent-casting from acetone. Both high molecular weight and low molecular weight samples of poly(methyl methacrylate) were used. For all proportions, incompatibility was observed, judged by physical properties of the cast films. Some copolymers structurally similar to the blended materials were tested as compatibilizing agents. (Ethyl acrylate)/(ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) copolymer did not affect compatibility; a terpolymer of (ethyl acrylate)/acrylonitrile/aminoacrylate to which ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate was grafted produced some compatibilizing effect; a 5 wt% addition of poly(styrene-co-ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) produced transparent and elastic films with lowered glass transition temperatures.
