Zusammenfassung:Resistance of sapphire and sintered Al sub 2 O sub 3 to corrosion by K vapor was examined at 1173 and 1373 K. As predicted from thermodynamic calculations, Al sub 2 O sub 3 was not stable. The K- beta -Al sub 2 O sub 3 formed had a preferential orientation with c-axis parallel to the surface. No protective layer against further corrosion formed. CaO as a dopant had no influence on corrosion reaction. 26 refs.
