Stability of the icosahedral phase in Mn-Ti alloys

Zusammenfassung:The crystallization of the icosahedral phase (i-phase) has been investigated in rapidly quenched MnTi sub 2 . Differential thermal analysis showed a broad endothermic peak between 1100-1350K. TEM studies showed that the i-phase transforms in this temperature range to at least two crystalline phases, one being unidentified and the other being a rhombohedral phase with a 1.77 nm edge length. Samples annealed at 1275K for 30 min in vacuum contained a bcc phase with a = 1.344 nm. None of these crystalline phases are present in the equilibrium phase diagram. It is suggested that the bcc phase is related to the Frank--Kasper phase Mg sub 32 (Al,Zn) sub 49 . Graphs, photomicrographs. 18 ref.--D.O.N.
