IRS-1A Applications for District Level Planning

Outlining the concepts of integrated district level planning the needs of data base, essential for the planning is elaborated. The methodology for district level planning based on applications of IRS-1A data and geographic information system, developed under the Department of Space, is briefly described. Essentially, it comprises data analysis and integration at two levels, namely (i) resource region analysis to ascertain resource potential and limitations for the suitability for various resource management activities, and (ii) programme region, aimed at identification of socially and economically backward areas lacking in basic amenities of life. The resource region analysis is based on identification of Composite Land Development Units. Some of the results of ongoing projects in respect of Bhiwani district, Haryana; Anantpur district, A.P., and Panchmahal district, Gujarat are discussed in the paper.
