Concerning the statement above that: “only one study using hydroxyzine as monotherapy has been reported in the literature” I would like to draw the readers' attention to an article (Shapira et al. 1992) published in 1992 in which the authors compared 3 combinations of sedation: (1) hydroxyzine 50 mg alone given orally, (2) hydroxyzine given orally with nitrous oxide inhalation and (3) nitrous oxide inhalation alone, in 19 children, between the ages of 25 and 45 months, who did not cooperate during dental examination. [...]I totally agree with the authors that oral hydroxyzine is a very safe sedative drug, but I would still recommend combining it with nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia to get even better clinical results (analgesia) for the benefit of the children treated.
