Zusammenfassung:The influence of the thundercloud electrostatic field on the night-time midlatitude ionospheric E-region is theoretically studied. It is shown that for some degree of thundercloud electrization a cavity is formed in the upper part of the E-region above the cloud. The electron density inside the cavity is several (up to 10) times smaller than the background electron density. The horizontal dimension of the cavity is about 200 km. The E-region maximum electron density decreases appreciably above the thundercloud as well.
