Zusammenfassung:This paper is a brief review of the approaches used to ensure the safety and reliability of aeroengine components subjected to cyclically varying loads. Particular reference is made to fracture-mechanics-based methods and to the increasing role of small-crack behaviour brought about by improvements in manufacturing technology and non-destructive inspection techniques. Finally, some potential improvements in life prediction methods are discussed which are based on a greater understanding of material and component behaviour.
