Zusammenfassung:Dimensional analysis is used to obtain asymptotic solutions that describe plume behavior in a two-layer ambient fluid. A single dimensionless parameter is found that measures the ability of the density discontinuity to stop plume rise. Experiments show the range of values of the parameter that define conditions for weak and strong density discontinuities. Constants are determined from the experimental data, which allow quantitative prediction of some spreading layer characteristics.
