Reaction of zirconium fluoride glass with water: kinetics of dissolution

When liquid water contacts a Zr-Ba-La fluoride glass, at least 3 different processes occur: Ba and Zr fluoride dissolve in the water, water penetrates the glass, and ZrF sub 4 crystals grow on the glass surface in static solution. Diffusion in the solid surface may control dissolution rate.
