Zusammenfassung:Severe perturbations of the neutral upper atmosphere caused by the dissipation of solar wind energy have become known as thermospheric storms. This review summarizes the temperature and density changes observed during such events. The following topics are discussed: (1) the morphology and origin of composition changes at high and middle latitudes; (2) low-latitude effects; (3) time delays between magnetic and thermospheric perturbations; (4) systematic variations; and (5) accuracy of model predictions.
