Surface hyperfine magnetic field in nickel

61Ni Mössbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles covered with a protective layer of SiO, with average diameters of 500 and 50 Å. The spectrum of 50 Å particles has a surface component corresponding to a hyperfine magnetic field of 40.3(5.4) kOe. This constitutes the...

Zusammenfassung:61Ni Mössbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles covered with a protective layer of SiO, with average diameters of 500 and 50 Å. The spectrum of 50 Å particles has a surface component corresponding to a hyperfine magnetic field of 40.3(5.4) kOe. This constitutes the first experimental evidence supporting the recent theoretical prediction of a significant reduction in the hyperfine magnetic field at the Ni surface as compared with the field in the bulk.
