Zusammenfassung: | Efforts to design and construct a dc Pelletron Free Electron Laser (FEL) to power a two-beam linear accelerator are reviewed. Consideration is given to two projects currently under development at universities in the U.S., a dc electron beam system, and a FEL using a Pelletron accelerator as the source of the electron beam. The operating characteristics of the Pelletron accelerator design is similar to the one used in the Fermilab electron cooling experiment which obtained an efficiency of 99.99 percent. The operating characteristics of the FEL are described and a line drawing of the device is provided. Some devices designed to increase the average output power in the Pelletron terminal are discussed, including: charging chains; and a mechanical rotating shaft driving a 50 kilowatt generator.
