Hardness of dense α- and β-Si3N4 ceramics
Evidence is adduced for the hypothesis that alpha-Si3N4 ceramics should have higher hardness than beta-Si3N4 of the same density and glass content. The lower hardness of beta-Si3N4 may be associated with the easier movement of matter into its large, continuous structural holes during microhardness i...

Zusammenfassung: | Evidence is adduced for the hypothesis that alpha-Si3N4 ceramics should have higher hardness than beta-Si3N4 of the same density and glass content. The lower hardness of beta-Si3N4 may be associated with the easier movement of matter into its large, continuous structural holes during microhardness indentation; alternatively, induced plastic deformation occurs by means of different primary slip systems. |
