Zusammenfassung:Tran Thoai et al . (ibid, 1986, 58, 319) have recently proposed that the discrepancy between crystallographic nearest neighbour distances and those derived from conventional analysis of the extended fine structure in the M sub 23 continua of 3d transition metals is due to significant contributions from 3p - > epsilon s ionization. Independent particle calculations are reported of the relative 3p - > epsilon s and 3p - > epsilon d ionization cross-sections of several 3d transition elements which show that the epsilon d channel dominates in the range of photoelectron energies relevant to extended fine structure analysis. Alternative origins for the above-mentioned discrepancy are discussed. 24 ref.--AA
