Zusammenfassung: | The Dugway array of gamma-ray telescopes has been used to observe M31 at energies above 1000 GeV. An excess of gamma-ray counts was seen from the direction of M31 with a conservative maximum-likelihood significance of 1 percent and attributed to a random fluctuation. The estimated flux of about 2.2 x 10 to the -10th photons/sq cm sec corresponds to a luminosity of 4 x 10 to the 40th erg/sec for energies above 1000 GeV. The measured spatial distribution is consistent with the angular dimension of the region of emission being about 1 degree. |
