Formation of the structure of the germanium surfaces cleaved at liquid helium temperatures

As the sample temperature decreases, the energy liberated upon cleaving causes a surface temperature shock due to strong reduction of heat capacity. This temperature shock is considered to be similar to the laser quenching effect.
