Processing and structural evolution of (xLi sub 2 O center dot (1-x)Na sub 2 O) center dot Al sub 2 O sub 3 center dot SiO sub 2

beta -eucryptite, prepared by the sol-gel technique using a methanolic solution of metal-organic precursors, has rapidly appearing crystalline phases and an incubation time of < 10 min. Substituting Na for Li controls the amount of eucryptite.
