Problems in production of Al-Li alloys

Production of Al--Li alloy group including Al--Li--Cu--Mg alloy is reviewed. Problems and measures in melting, foundry, powder metallurgy and thermomechanical treatment are explained. Effects of flux or inert gas covering and of inert cooling liquid, improving ways of toughness, tensile strength and microstructure are also introduced. Investments of industrial production by Alcoa, Alcan and Pechiney are shown. Airplane production in Japan is not so large and the need for Al--Li alloy is low. 33 ref.--JLMA(Alfed/UK/US).
