Characterisation of distributive mixing in thermoplastics compositions

Problems associated with assessment of mixture uniformity are discussed with particular reference to polymer compositions containing pigment additives. The use of automatic image analysis is described and shown to be a rapid means of quantifying distributive mixture quality in these materials. Results are presented which demonstrate the application of this technique to measurement of polymer mixing by twin-screw extrusion.
