Zusammenfassung:Botros et al discuss their study on the effects of mercaptopurine on pulmonary vascular resistance and BMPR2 expression in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is an incurable disease characterized by vascular obliteration and luminal narrowing. Current vasodilator therapies have no proven effect on the underlying molecular and cellular changes in the PAH lung, which include the emergence of apoptosis-resistant cell populations and proliferation of endothelial cells.
