On the possible interaction of two gas systems in the galaxy NGC 1275. Spectrophotometric data

Zusammenfassung: | Data are obtained on the brightness and relative intensities of the forbidden O II line at 3727 A, the H-beta line, the forbidden O III line at 5007 A, the H-alpha line, and the forbidden N II line at 6583 A in the emission spectrum of two gas systems in the central region of NGC 1275. The spectral observations are made with an image tube spectrograph at the direct focus of the 6-m telescope. Interesting physical conditions are found in the neighborhood of two details: a knot 3-arcsec to the northwest and a detail 7-arcsec to the northeast of the center of NGC 1275. Bright low-velocity gas is observed near the first detail and bright high-velocity gas near the second. It is noted that the entire region is characterized by a high temperature and/or degree of ionization of the gas clouds of both the gas systems discovered by Minkowski. In this region, a gas stream having velocities of several thousand km/sec has already been found. The data are thought to suggest that there are two systems of gas which interact in this region of NGC 1275. |
