Stress distribution around a slender notch in a beam

A detailed two dimensional photoelastic investigation is made of the stress distribution around a slender notch in a simply supported beam subjected to a central load. It is found that the shear stress attains a maximum when the notch axis is inclined at 30° with the centroidal axis of the beam.
