Gas Shielded Arc Welding of High Carbon Steel. I.--Effects of Shielding Gas Compositions on Properties of Weld Metals

Zusammenfassung: | Angle expanding type cracking tests showed that the susceptibility of the weld metal to hot cracking was least with a shielding gas composition of CO sub 2 + 20%O sub 2 : for Ar--CO sub 2 or Ar--O sub 2 gas mixtures the hot cracking susceptibility increased with the ratio of Ar to CO sub 2 or O sub 2 . In narrow gap welding, butt welding in the flat position gave weld metal carbon contents of about 0.14-0.15%, while for the vertical position the carbon content was about 0.18%. For bead welding the weld metal carbon content varied between 0.24 and 0.34%, depending on the shielding gas mixture. 9 ref.--BA |
