Zusammenfassung:Scanning electron microscope examinations of surfaces damaged by fretting fatigue were performed to establish variations in microstructural and environmental effects on the fretting fatigue process of ferrite/pearlite and martensite microstructures of a .40 .50 carbon steel. The observations suggest differences in fretting mechanisms in laboratory air and “vacuum” conditions as well as differences due to surface hardness.
