Zusammenfassung:The degree of oxidation and retention of sulfur dioxide in supercooled cloud droplets during change of phase initiated by contact with ice crystals are mechanisms that influence the scavenging of sulfur dioxide by precipitation. A laboratory experiment using droplets at −10°C in a clean mixture of air and sulfur dioxide showed that insignificant oxidation takes place during freezing but that a substantial fraction of the dissolved sulfur dioxide is trapped (~ 25%) in the frozen drop.
