Ghosts of the Taíno

Toner features archaeologist Chris Espenshade's excavations revealing the mystery and controversy haunt of a pre-Columbian ceremonial site in Puerto Rico, which had once been occupied by the Taino people. The story began to unfold in May 2007, when Espenshade and his team began their archaeological discovery of the batey (ball court) in the country. As word of the discoveries made headlines, some Puerto Rican archaeologists complained that artifacts and human remains were being removed from the island without being registered with Puerto Rican authorities.
