Remembering the Hippocratic Oath in Surgical Training

The Hippocratic Oath has been appropriately modernized but is known primarily as a promise to practice the art and science of medicine while maintaining a patient's welfare. Within the oath, what is often forgotten is the pledge to respect other physician colleagues: "To hold him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to be a partner in life with him, and...to Look upon his offspring as equals to my own siblings, and to teach them this art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or contract. Peer support has long been recognized as an essential component of being an effective physician and is even more relevant today.
