"Democracy is . . . neither new nor strange to many Muslims," he writes, pointing out that so many of the "values that we have come to take for granted", and that we equate with those of a west supposedly at odds with Islam, have been only recently acquired; and that in most ofthe predominantly Muslim countries where we observe autocratic rule, the dictatorships have been secular and deeply opposed to Islamism.
