Zusammenfassung: | A process for manufacturing carbon fibers of a larger diameter than have those usually available is described. Basic in the process is the controlled carbonization of resin-impregnated bundles of carbon fiber or their precursors after curing. The end product is a thin rod or fiber of carbon-reinforced carbon with desirable cross-sectional shape or area. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of pyrolysis, of the rate of cure and of temperature on the properties of the composite fiber. Fibers of reasonable quality have been produced, and improvements are expected from the optimization of the process. |
