Zusammenfassung:Americans have been demanding more services from government, but, at the same time, they have become alarmed at the tremendous cost of government and dismayed by the feeling that they do not get their money's worth. It would be better to spend less time denunciating the government and more time establishing clearer guidelines about what is and is not expected from government. The government is inescapably involved in the US economy and makes that economic activity possible. Business activity would be nearly impossible without rules established by government and without government's coercive power to enforce contracts and protect property rights. Government also has a legitimate restraining role on marketplace activities. The role of government should not be rejected. However, regulation needs to be made more efficient, less costly, and better attuned to the nation's needs. A government which has a clearer purpose and direction is needed. Government should understand the goals of social progress and economic efficiency.
