Observation of stable auroral red arcs from Southern Africa

The equatorial edge of a SARARC (stable auroral red arc) was observed during the recovery phase of a 200-gamma magnetic storm between 0000 and 0140 UT on Dec. 18, 1971 at Roma (lat. 29.7 S, long. 27.7 E) in Lesotho, Southern Africa. The observations were obtained with a photometer fitted with narrow...

Zusammenfassung:The equatorial edge of a SARARC (stable auroral red arc) was observed during the recovery phase of a 200-gamma magnetic storm between 0000 and 0140 UT on Dec. 18, 1971 at Roma (lat. 29.7 S, long. 27.7 E) in Lesotho, Southern Africa. The observations were obtained with a photometer fitted with narrow filters centered on 6300 and 5577 A. Isophote skymaps are presented showing the progress of the arc across the field of the photometer.
