More specifically, the discusser raises several key issues in the design of a primary rectangular sedimentation basin (PRST) that deserve added comment. Four issues in particular were highlighted: 1. How practical is the mathematical model? 2. Considering the range of the particle size used in Bechteler and Schrimpf (1985), how is the settling velocity of the particles modeled in this study? Are the model's results based on a single settling velocity (SSV) or a settling velocity curve (SVC)? 3. How significant is numerical mixing versus physical mixing? 4. How sensitive are the model's results to the turbulent Schmidt number?.
