Public virtue: law and the social character of religion

The common theme of this diverse but related collection of essays is the interaction between religion, public morality and law in American society. Each essay is closely reasoned. We are treated to studies of the proper and improper role of religion, the relation of the state to pluralistic religious community, the interaction of law with public morality, the limits of positivism in legal education and practice, the moral ambiguities of President Wilson's action in the 1915 Lusitania crisis and finally two meanings of the term "natural law."
