Two subspecies of Agrias claudina Godart from Lower Amazone A. claudina croesus Staudinger and A. cl. lucianus n. ssp. (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)

O. Staudinger and A. H. Fassl have successively published under the same name two distinct subspecies of Agrias claudina. The first one, distributed between the rio Tapajos and Maues, is known under the name A. claudina croesus Staudinger, 1895. The second one, distributed more to the east between Marajo Island, the rio Xingu and the rio Tapajos, is described here under the name A. claudina lucianus n. ssp. An identification mistake by Fassl in his description of the second subspecies leads us to apply the name michaeli Fassl, 1921, to a subspecies of Agrias narcissus, as a senior synonym of illustrissimus Fassl, 1921.
