Factors influencing progress through the liminal phase: A model to assist transition into nurse academic life

•The transition from clinician to academic can be described as a journey of adversity and resilience.•New nurse academics experience three phases of liminality in their transition.•There are multiple barriers to progression through the liminal phase for new nurse academics.•There are strategies and interventions that assist in the development of resilience in the liminal phase.•These factors can influence the liminal phase and if successful can result in belongingness, confidence and career progression.
