Zusammenfassung:IT WAS when he came to Rome from Mali in 1968 to participate in the International Course on Public Health organised by the WHO and the Carlo Forlanini Institute that I first met Souleymane Sangare. I regularly taught one of the 2-week modules of the course. That year I noticed him immediately as one of the most active and attentive participants, asking the most pertinent, and often embarrassing, questions. He was extremely persistent, wanting to be entirely sure that he understood the answers I gave, and I had the impression that this exercise taught me as much as it did him.
