How many times have we been told "we don't recognize where our true interests lie" and someone will have to guide us? We've heard that from males and now from Carol Downer -- she doesn't even change the wording. I saw the self-help clinics degenerate into a superficial chore, used more intently as another means of maintaining power than as a revolutionary, knowledge-passing concept. A few ex-members of the FWHC found that a women's center here would not allow them to do a self-help presentation. The women's center was under the impression that self-help was strictly owned by the FWHC and although the FWHC denied them the services because they wouldn't get paid, the women's center wouldn't let anyone else do it. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO STATE THAT THE FWHC DOES NOT HAVE A PATENT ON THE SELF-HELP CONCEPT. In retrospect, I see clearly that the FWHC is an exercise in darwinism. I have also found that the idea of "Self Help" has become a company and professionalized. It is FWHC property. No one near an FWHC would dare to hold a neighborhood "Self Help" group without the FWHC present. Institutions here in Orange County are outspokenly fearful about having anyone but the FWHC do a "self Help" presentation for them. The reason -- "bad P.R. and it is the FWHC's property."
