Adolescence and immunization : an opportunity for dialogue or trialogue

Adolescence is a phase of development and transition in which significant physical, psychological and social changes occur. Vaccination is addressed in health check-ups, which are the first reason for consultation with adolescents in family practices. The primary care physician, by addressing the topic of vaccination adequately and appropriately, should identify adolescent's and parent's representations of vaccinations. The physician should talk about the fears and hesitations detected and clarify with the adolescent and his family the importance of vaccination. Physicians should discuss about risks and benefits in case of vaccination or not. They may benefit from this discussion as an opportunity to encourage adolescents to think about their health in general including the family in the process if wanted by the patient.
