Zusammenfassung: | The Barrens topminnow is considered endangered in Tennessee, where it is known only from four locations in Elk Creek and West Hickory Creek in the Barrens Plateau region. The morphology, distribution, abundance, habitat, ecology, and reproductive habits of this species are summarized. Stream reaches where the topminnow is found have been subject to drought, and are further threatened by development and degradation from cattle. Colonization of topminnow habitat by Gambusia affinis also may negatively affect young topminnow survival. This species has been bred successfully in captivity and is being introduced into other areas in the Barrens Plateau, as a cooperative effort of private organizations, state and federal agencies, and private landowners. Monitoring and habitat protection are needed to encourage growth of aquatic vegetation in spawning areas. |
