Decreased Levels of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 in Root-Canal Exudates During Root Canal Treatment

Highlights • The presence of gelatinolytic bands of both proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 in root-canal exudates from patients with pulp necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis. • The absence of proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 in root-canal exudates from patients with normal pulp and periradicular tissues...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • The presence of gelatinolytic bands of both proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 in root-canal exudates from patients with pulp necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis. • The absence of proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 in root-canal exudates from patients with normal pulp and periradicular tissues, as a negative control. • Significantly reduced levels of total MMP-2 and MMP-8, which has been previously shown as an indicator for inflammation at the periradicular tissue, in root-canal exudates after endodontic treatment in patients with pulp necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis. • The undetectable level of total MMP-2 in root-canal exudates at the last treatment visit. • Significantly lower MMP-2 and MMP-8 levels in root-canal exudates of the negative bacterial cultures than those of the positive bacterial cultures.
