Effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on diabetic ketoacidosis: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Highlights • SGLT-2 inhibitors are capable of stimulating the release of glucagon and ketone re-absorption in the renal tubuli, increasing the risk of ketoacidosis. • Ketoacidosis during treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors is a relevant acidosis and ketosis with only mild hyperglycemia, which may repres...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • SGLT-2 inhibitors are capable of stimulating the release of glucagon and ketone re-absorption in the renal tubuli, increasing the risk of ketoacidosis. • Ketoacidosis during treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors is a relevant acidosis and ketosis with only mild hyperglycemia, which may represent an obstacle for a correct diagnosis. • The present meta-analysis shows that if the drug is properly prescribed, the risk of DKA is negligible in patients with type 2 diabetes.
