2016 AMCA MEMORIAL LECTURE HONOREE: THOMAS OSCAR FULTZ, JR.: A MODERN MOSQUITO PIONEER 1

Many may have not heard of Thomas Oscar Fultz, he is the reason you are here today in Savannah. If you knew Oscar, you loved Oscar, for he enriched your life in many ways only truly appreciated with the passage of time. If truth be known, AMCA Memorial Lectures are often reserved for those scientists whose research has formed the foundations of their profession. But people must never forget that the application of this research towards the betterment of humankind is the true arbiter of its worth beyond mere intellectual exercise -- and Oscar Fultz's contributions in applied mosquito control are most worthy of note in this regard. Oscar was everyman, an ordinary man -- but with extraordinary talent and vision, a classic pillar of his community, who touched many lives and was much beloved by all who had the great good fortune to have known him.
