mantispid larva can preserve its spider egg prey: evidence for an aggressive allomone
Data indicate that larvae of Mantispa uhleri Banks can halt the development of their spider egg prey. Absence of mechanical injury to the eggs suggests that halting is accomplished with an aggressive allomone. Such a mechanism allows larvae to consume eggs that might otherwise have hatched.
