Facilitation of sexual behavior in ovariectomized rats by estradiol and testosterone: A preclinical model of androgen effects on female sexual desire

Highlights • The mechanisms of testosterone’s facilitation of women’s sexual desire are unknown. • We propose a rodent model to study the neuroendocrine mechanisms. • Administration of 10 μg EB with 200 μg TP facilitated appetitive sexual behaviors. • Effective dosing regimens differed between Long-Evans and Wistar rats. • Long-Evans may be a more useful model due to higher baseline sexual inhibition.
