The role, costs and value for money of external consultancies in the health sector: A study of New Zealand’s District Health Boards

Highlights • Internationally, spending on external consultants within the health sector is increasing rapidly. • Spending on external consultants by New Zealand’s District Health Boards is substantial. • Many were unable to easily identify the extent or purpose of consultancy activity. • Few had policies in place on engaging consultants or ensuring value for money. • There is a need for greater accountability for expenditure and value for money.
