Production of antimicrobial compounds by Monascus purpureus CCRC31499 using shrimp and crab shell powder as a carbon source
The culture supernatants from five strains of Monascus species, M. purpureus CCRC31499, M. purpureus CCRC32966, M. purpureus CCRC31530, M. ruber CCRC31535 and M. pilosus CCRC31527, were tested for their antifungal activity in bioassay against Fusarium oxysporum. The culture supernatants obtained fro...

Zusammenfassung: | The culture supernatants from five strains of
Monascus species,
M.
purpureus CCRC31499,
M.
purpureus CCRC32966,
M.
purpureus CCRC31530,
M.
ruber CCRC31535 and
M.
pilosus CCRC31527, were tested for their antifungal activity in bioassay against
Fusarium
oxysporum. The culture supernatants obtained from these strains grown aerobically in media containing shrimp and crab shell wastes (SCSP) displayed a wide range of antimicrobial activities. The addition of SCSP resulted in enhancement of the yield of antifungal activity on pathogenic
F.
oxysporum. Among these five strains,
M.
purpureus CCRC31499 exhibited maximal antifungal activity, when cultured in media supplemented with 1% SCSP. Antifungal activity of the crude compounds from CCRC31499 was stable at pH range from 6 to 8. But the activity completely disappeared after being heated at 100
°C for 5
min. Spore germination and germ spore elongation of
F.
oxysporum were inhibited by the supernatant. In addition to antimicrobial, chitinolytic and proteolytic activities, CCRC31499 also exhibited activity of enhancing rape growth in culture broth. These characteristics were unique in comparison with those of other already-known
Monascus. This is the first report of production of antimicrobial and rape growth enhancing compounds by
Monascus species. |
