The influence of mineralogical textural and chemical characteristics on the durability of selected sandstones in Istanbul, Turkey

The paper describes the analyses and geotechnical testing of sandstones taken from a road cutting to the north east of Istanbul, Turkey. Samples were carefully selected in the field in order to obtain material representative of the complete weathering profile. Although unconfined compressive strength, point load index values and Schmidt hammer rebound numbers were obtained, the slake durability test provided the closest correlation with weathering grade.Original Abstract: L'article decrit les analyses et tests geotechniques realises sur des gres provenant d'un talus routier au nord-est d'Istanbul (Turquie). Des echantillons ont ete soigneusement preleves sur le terrain afin d'obtenir des materiaux representatifs de la totalite du profil d'alteration. Bien que des essais de resistance a la compression simple, des essais de resistance pointes (essai Franklin) et des essais au marteau de Schmidt aient ete realises, l'essai de durabilite (resistance a l'ecaillage) a fourni la meilleure correlation avec le degre d'alteration meteorique.
